SUCCESSFUL RESULTS ON THE RADIAL PLATE PROTOTYPE

  • 12/5/2012

The regular radial plate prototype was manufactured by SIMIC, utilizing 16 sections of 316LN Iter Grade stainless steel butt welded by Narrow Gap TIG. The whole radial plate was then machined with a large portal machine (10 meters wide x 15 meters long) installed in our worshop in Marghera-Venice.

On the radial plate the required and very demanding tolerances were achieved. This success demonstrates the feasibility of the radial plate for the first time, and also qualifies the technology selected by SIMIC for the manufacturing. F4E is now preparing the launch of the tender procedure for the production of 70 radial plates needed to produce the 10 coils that represent the European share to the ITER toroidal field magnet system. SIMIC will partecipate to the tender.
